Decision-Making on Land-Use in Karstic Regions - The KATER II Project

The KATER II project developed a Decision Support System (DSS) which addresses and analyses the impacts of five different forms of land-use on water in karstic regions: tourism, settlements, transport infrastructure, forestry and pasture.
Extensive material on DSS dealing with land-use in karstic regions was presented at the Conference "All About Karst & Water" of the KATER II Project in Vienna.
The KATER II project focuses on the conflict between safeguarding water supply and land-use activities in karstic regions. Often these areas are essential for public water supply and comprise highly sensitive environments.
The KATER II project involves project partners and regions from Austria, Croatia, Italy and Slovenia. Besides documents on the KATER website, a video-presentation and extensive publication material are available.

Elbe Atlas Presented at the Final Conference of the ELLA Project

The ELLA - Project "Elbe-Labe Preventive Flood Management Measures by Transnational Spatial Planning" displayed at its final conference the project results achieved in three years of project work after the devastating flood event on the river Elbe in 2002. More than 200 participants, many from science and politics, attendend the conference which was held in the Sächsischer Landtag in Dresden from 4. - 6. December 2006.

The objectives of the ELLA project are joint action programmes and transnational cooperations in spatial planning and preventive flood protection in the catchment area of the river Elbe.

One result of the ELLA project is the "Elbe Atlas" which contains maps depicting the flood hazard and damage potential in the river Elbe basin. Among others, the maps in the atlas might serve as a valuable source for future spatial planning maps in the catchment area of Elbe and Labe.

More information on the ELLA project can be found on the ELLA website: www.ella-interreg.org.

ILUP project Final Meeting

The risk potential in river basins has increased strongly due to the enormous use pressure. In view of the demographic concentration in river basins and potential climate changes, safety in valleys is only possible if protective water management and other disciplines cooperate. In selected river basins, exemplary new methods are being tested, strategies developed and pilot projects implemented. Due to space limitations, infrastructure planning, land use and the protection of resources require an integrated approach, and multifunctional strategies must be developed. The problems of foothill and hill countries regarding integrated management of water resources, risk and landscape management can be solved sustainably only in an interdisciplinary way. ILUP pursues the basic concept of a holistic, network-oriented landscape assessment from the problem solving approach to the implementation of measures.

The Final meeting of the project will take place on December 5-7, 2006 in Waidhofen/Ybbs, Austria.

INTERIM project’s workshop on "Analysis of the supply side in the intermodal market"

Sustainable transport relations in this region are essential to connect these markets with the Single European Market. Interoperability of goods transport systems is a backbone to provide intermodal services.
Partners from Germany and Austria, who are involved in the intermodal market and network development, meet with experts from Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Serbia in the INTERIM project.
The project’s focus is to improve the cohesion of intermodal networks, actors and approaches by using spatial development instruments.
The project partners will elaborate a model with IT-tools on how such a process can be integrated in national spatial development plans. The project will also demonstrate with selected intermodal transport chains (rail, inland waterway and harbour-hinterland) how such integration can be implemented with respect to intermodal markets and spatial development.
At the workshop in Rijeka, Croatia first results of the supply and demand analyses of inter-modal goods transport systems will be presented and discussed by experts from the fields of traffic and transport, logistics and spatial planning.

RePUS Project – Mid-Conference

The project is focused on polycentric urban development in Central-Eastern Europe stressing in particular the role of Small and Medium Cities (SMC) and the urban-rural relations. The main target is to assess the  potential for a more diffused urban type development that can contribute to strength the economic growth of this areas at large, counterbalancing the increasing urban and economic polarisation that is taken place since the 1990s with transition.  Beyond the central role of the capital cities and the main urban poles,  does exist a potential for the strengthening of the SMC and improve the rural areas accessibility and service provision. The economic, social and spatial implications will be analysed both from the empirical as well as policy point of views looking the aspects of integration and co-operation among the urban areas, in the territorial contiguity as well as at trans-national level.

CADSEALAND Final Conference
The problem of coast protecting (in particular from coastal erosion) is dramatic in several coastal areas of Mediterranean and, specifically, in the regions considered in the project: according to international documents, the percentage of protected coast is less than 20% (including some zeros!) in such regions. The problem of defending the coast, in particular from erosion, is felt everywhere in the Italian, Greek and Rumanian areas considered in the project. That is why CADSEALAND project, approved in the 2nd call of the INTERREG IIIB Programme CADSES, brought together three nations (Italy, Greece and Romania) to collaborate through national and regional institutions on the development of integrated view of land-sea action, emphasizing coastal preservation and protection.
The results and outputs of the project will be presented on the Finale Conference, which will be held in Italy, Portonovo (Ancona) on 9 and 10 November 2006 in the presence of political and scientific forum.

SISTEMaPARC Project Exhibition
Protected areas like national parks are both highly vulnerable as well as extremely important in terms of preservation of natural and cultural heritage. But, in many cases they are also affected by economically driven planning and management strategies. Appropriate measures which consider the variety of impact patterns on the landscape even with contrary demands such as agriculture, extension of the transport network and – last but not least – nature protection, have to be developed. The use of geo-spatial data is an important backbone for the sustainable development of these regions. There is thus an urgent need to integrate and to maintain spatial information systems - especially for (cross-border) protected regions.
The project SISTEMaPARC aims to foster sustainable regional development of national park regions by improving or establishing geo-spatial information pools and exchange of communication concerning homogenised documentation and management.
A recently opened exhibition at the Information Centre "Nationalparkhaus Sächsische Schweiz" in Bad Schandau (Germany), exemplarily presents some main activities and achieved results with special focus on the National Park Region of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland. Posters cover a wide range of topics: They inform about land use and land use changes during the last 200 years, highlight the impacts of land use changes on the flora, present a homogeneous geo-spatial data base which was derived from Airborne Laser Scanner data and illustrate the established web-based platform for communication and data exchange.
The exhibition is open to the public and can be visited during the opening hours of the Information Centre until mid of November 2006.
